Pipe Major

James Clough began piping in 1965, joining his brother Doug to receive instruction from Dr. William Forbes of Rome, NY and to play in the Syracuse Kiltie Pipe Band. The pivotal year in Jim's piping career was 1973, when he co-founded the 78th Fraser's Highlanders (now the Mohawk Valley Frasers).

From that year to the present, Jim's commitment to piping has been continuous - improving his own skills with regular tuition, attending summer schools to receive instruction from many top pipers, and teaching pipers and pipe bands.

In addition to his work with the Frasers, Jim was a founder of Oran Mor Pipe Band and, for eight years, served as its pipe sergeant. He has also served on the EUSPBA Advisory Committee and, for several years, taught piping at the Invermark College of Piping's summer schools.

Jim is an accomplished teacher. His students have frequently advanced to become top amateur pipers, and his Fraser's bands have won EUSPBA Supreme Championships four times and twice risen to the Grade 2 level.

Jim resides in Ava, NY, in a home where the enthusiasm for pipe music is shared by his wife Liz, an active drummer and instructor of Highland dancing, and his daughter, Jessie, a Highland dancer.
